Y’all, there is NOTHING - and I mean NOTHING - I love more than walking through a house. Open houses, home tours, show houses, all of it. Hell, invite me into your home for dinner, and say, “Hey Tash, want to see my house?” and I’ll follow you around like a little puppy and ooh and aah every little corner, and hope that you open every single door, so I can peer inside! I even tell every realtor friend I have to give me a call whenever they want company previewing homes for clients. I could look at houses all day!

And not just look at them. But I’m one of those weird characters who ‘speak’ to houses. No lie. I run my hands along walls and try and listen for their stories. Because, my friends, homes always have stories.

The older homes hold a plethora of secrets. They’re like those little old ladies who have so many interesting stories to tell, if someone would just sit down for a cup of tea with them and listen. They weave the most fabulous tales… And I like nothing better than to tuck my feet under me on the sofa, cup that hot mug of tea in my hands, and learn about all the history. Old people - once you get them going - can teach you so so much about how to see the world. I really feel like that old adage ‘youth is wasted on the young’ rings so true…

Having said that, I don’t disregard new homes. Even new construction homes have stories to tell. Even new builds provide a window into the world of the people who live there. Sometimes, more of a window than an old home.

Because the older homes speak of a history that you almost have to be psychic to hear. But new homes? They lay it all bare for you.

A new construction home is a labor of love. The family that built it spent YEARS thinking about it, planning it, designing it with their architect and then their interior designer, and then waiting (not so) patiently for it all to come together. And then it is laid bare - every wish, every thought, every desire, every journey the family has ever been on - is on display for all to see.

So when I see a modern home or a new build, where the homeowners are the first ones living in it, I consider it SUCH a privilege and an honor to be invited in. Because I know that they are being vulnerable and trusting me.

And that is why I am a little nervous and excited to be inviting YOU into MY new build home for a tour. That’s right, folks! For the first time ever, I am laying it all out for you to see!

As you may or may not know, we have been building our new house for the last few. If you ask my husband - the Doc - he’ll dramatically say we’ve been building FOREVER. It actually took our builders 14 months start to finish, which is pretty fabulous.

ANYWAY, I digress… So we’ve been building our home and now - honor of honors -

We were INVITED to participate, y’all! Our incredible architect, Brad Hollenbeck from Hollenbeck Associates thought we would be perfect and recommended us. I am humbled.

And SOOOOOO busy getting the house ready!

So if you’ve been my client and you’ve seen me run around like a headless chicken for you? Well, my husband is so chuffed - THRILLED even - that I’m finally doing it for us! It’s hilarious. I don’t think he’s ever loved me so much!

I’m doing client work by day, and being my own interior designer by night. It’s madness!

How It Happened…

Want to hear the whole crazy story?? Of course you do, go grab a glass of something. Or a cup. I’m waiting.

So this home tour wasn’t even on my radar. You normally have to submit your home to be considered and go through a rigorous process of acceptance. But I randomly received an email from my rockstar architect Brad Hollenbeck of Hollenbeck Architects on Friday evening, asking if we would be interested (um, yes!) and if he could send someone to take pictures.

I said yes (of course!), but could we do the pictures next week? And then, my sweetheart of a contractor and his crew came in and turned my house upside down from Friday to Monday - hanging wallpaper, art, sconces, doing electrical, moving furniture, assembling everything under the sun, mounting hardware - while my home team (my kids and husband) opened boxes and organized every space they could find. I measured, commanded, moved things, moved them some more, shopped, scribbled, drew things out, schemed, wallpapered walls, opened boxes, ordered people around, styled and generally drove everyone mad.

But when they came to take pictures, we had transformed the space from ‘just-moved-in-and-it-looks-bombed’ to ‘wow’. It’s nowhere near where I want it. What I thought I would do over the next year, I’m having to do in a month. I’m doing floor plans, ordering furniture, I have walls to paint, a backsplash to put in, accents to work on, styling to figure out, drapery to order, rugs to order and roll out, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Keep in mind the pictures you see here don’t have the furniture we want, or the rugs, or the paint color on the walls, and nothing is styled - Taashki-styled. And the fabulous backsplash I’ve been dreaming about for YEARS will be installed by the end of the month…

But it will get to where it will get. The home you see may not be the final iteration. But it’s already feeling like home. And true to my signature style, it DOES tell our story and all the life journeys our family has been on.

It makes me smile. It has lots of quirks. It is a house that could only be ours. No one could describe it as cookie cutter. And if they dared, we’d definitely have words! 🤣
